It's been a while since my last post, and that's honestly because I completely forgot about my blog! My team has been very busy settling into life in Omaha, Nebraska. We are living in an extended stay hotel and are working at the American Red Cross (ARC) Heartland Chapter.
Our hotel is right next to a 10-mile running trail along a creek, so that has been quite a luxury. It also has an indoor pool and gym, plus free breakfast. Needless to say, the living situation is going swimmingly.
Our first week with the ARC has us completing a lot of office work. However, it is being balanced by some really neat projects and trainings. So far we have:
-Assisted in, and donated to, a blood drive
-Received training to participate in the ARC's Disaster Action Team, which provides on-the-spot needs assistance to families after house fires
-Received training to teach kids in grades 3-5 the Pillowcase Project, which educates students about fires and local hazards (ie: tornados in Nebraska, earthquakes in California, etc.)
-Partcipated in fire canvassing campaigns, where we install smoke alarms in homes that cannot afford to
