I’m sitting here smiling while typing because I got to see my sister and grandpa last night and tonight I get to see my cousin. Yep, I’m back in Kansas! Kansas City, to be precise. Not only that, but it is 70 and sunny and my current housing is a kids’ summer camp. Trail running, air hockey, pool, and basketball have been some of my favorite camp activities here. We’ve also been volunteering in the community. This morning we helped prepare a garden for planting at a transitional home for the homeless, and yesterday we cleaned the facilities and pet the animals at a humane society-type organization.

This news may throw some people off a bit…Yes, I am still going to Omaha, but we had to make a detour to get more training in Kansas City first. Here’s a timeline to make some sense out of everything:
May 17: left Vicksburg (spent the night in Little Rock, AR & visited Little Rock Central High School)
May 18: arrived in Kansas City
May 19: had my first day off in ~2 weeks
May 20: volunteered at humane society
May 21: volunteered at transitional home
May 22: University of Kansas plays Wichita State (Rock chalk!)
May 23: FEMA orientation
May 24: Red Cross orientation
May 25: head to Omaha to begin work with Red Cross
FEMA Corps life is very unpredictable. For example, we still do not know where we will be living during our six weeks in Omaha. Luckily I trust the AmeriCorps staff who find our jobs and lodging for us—they haven’t disappointed yet!
