At 8 this morning, the whole FEMA Corps Denver campus (24 vans) departed for Vicksburg, Mississippi to attend FEMA Corps Academy, where we will get training in our specific tasks.

More exciting, however, is that we got our first project assignments! Some teams will head back to Denver, some to Texas, New York, California, Washington. Our Disaster Survivor Assistance team will be stationed in Omaha, Nebraska to work with the Red Cross on fire safety efforts. We’ll get to work in the community to prepare individuals, families, schools, etc. I don’t know anything else beyond that at the moment, but I am excited to know where we are going—and that I get to check another state off my visit list.

As always, if there is a natural disaster, we will leave the Omaha location to deploy to the disaster site. We also will return to Denver periodically for transition weeks/training and break periods.
